UN torture committee publishes findings on Ireland

The UN Committee Against Torture (UNCAT) has published the findings from its recent examination of Ireland.

The concluding observations published online include strong recommendations for action on immigration, healthcare, detention, violence against women, reproductive rights and historic abuse.

Minister of state David Stanton led a delegation to Geneva last month for the examination of Ireland’s compliance with the UN Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (UNCAT), which it ratified in 2002.

The UN committee also received submissions from 20 Irish NGOs, including the Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission.

ILN will carry in-depth analysis of the UN findings on Monday.

Genes on the Y Chromosome

Every human has 23 pairs of chromosomes – organized packets of genetic information (DNA) which code for all the necessary amino acids to create a human being. The twenty-third set of chromosomes determine the gender of a person: two X chromosomes create a female, and an X paired with a Y creates a male.

The Y chromosome is much smaller than a typical X chromosome, and contains somewhere between 70-200 genes (the entire human genome comprises approximately 20,000-25,000 genes). Some important genes on the Y chromosome include:

SRY: The SRY (Sex Determining Y Region) gene determines gender. This gene will bind to other DNA in the cell, distorting it out of shape. This single gene creates the male phenotype. In a very rare genetic event, the gene sometimes gets translocated onto an X chromosome. When this happens, the child carries a genome that should be female (46, XX), but develops as a male. Adult men with a 46, XX karyotype and a translocated SRY gene are often identified due to infertility or hypogonadism (underdeveloped testes).

SHOX: The SHOX gene (Short Stature Homeobox) is located on the X and the Y chromosome. This gene is responsible for skeletal growth. While many genes are located only on the X chromosome, this gene is present in both the X and the Y chromosome, so that each gender receives two functional copies of the gene.

USP9Y: This gene (ubiquitin specific peptidase 9, Y-linked) is found on the Y chromosome, and is only present in males. This gene is involved in the production of healthy sperm, and infertile males sometimes have a mutation in this gene.

The Y chromosome is not necessary for the male phenotype. The SRY gene is required, however, and it is almost always located on the Y chromosome. In a few rare cases, the SRY gene has been translocated (moved) to the X chromosome by accident. In these cases, the genotype is 46, XX – this would normally indicate a female genotype. In the rare case of translocation of the SRY gene, however, a man can be 46, XX: these men are often fully masculinized, but are infertile. This is sometimes called the “XX Male Syndrome.”

There are also reports of men who have a 46, XX genotype without the SRY gene. The causes of this rare occurrence have not been completely investigated. Like the men with the translocated SRY gene, these men are infertile.

Irish and British DNA : a comparison

The Kingdom of Dalriada c 500 AD is marked in green. Pictish areas marked yellow. British and Irish DNA suggests that people on the two islands have much genetically in common. Males in both islands have a strong predominance of Haplogroup 1 gene, meaning that most of us in the British Isles are descended from the same Spanish stone age settlers.

The main difference is the degree to which later migrations of people to the islands affected the population’s DNA. Parts of Ireland (most notably the western seaboard) have been almost untouched by outside genetic influence since hunter-gatherer times. Men there with traditional Irish surnames have the highest incidence of the Haplogroup 1 gene – over 99%.

At the same time London, for example, has been a mutli-ethnic city for hundreds of years. Furthermore, England has seen more arrivals of new people from Europe – Anglo-Saxons and Normans – than Ireland.

Therefore while the earliest English ancestors were very similar in DNA and culture to the tribes of Ireland, later arrivals to England have created more diversity between the two groups.

Irish and Scottish people share very similar DNA. The obvious similarities of culture, pale skin, tendancy to red hair have historically been prescribed to the two people’s sharing a common celtic ancestry. Actually it now seems much more likely that the similarity results from the movement of people from the north of Ireland into Scotland in the centuries 400 – 800 AD. At this time the kingdom of Dalriada, based near Ballymoney in County Antrim extended far into Scotland. The Irish invaders brought Gaelic language and culture, and they also brought their genes.

Irish Characteristics and DNA  The MC1R gene has been identified by researchers as the gene responsible for red hair as well as the accompanying fair skin and tendency towards freckles. According to recent research, genes for red hair first appeared in human beings about 40,000 to 50,000 years ago. 

These genes were then brought to the British Isles by the original settlers, men and women who would have been relatively tall, with little body fat, athletic, fair-skinned and who would have had red hair. So red-heads may well be descended from the earliest ancestors of the Irish and British.

Irish origin myths confirmed by modern scientific evidence One of the oldest texts composed in Ireland is the Leabhar Gabhla, the Book of Invasions. It tells a semi-mythical history of the waves of people who settled in Ireland in earliest time. It says the first settlers to arrive in Ireland were a small dark race called the Fir Bolg, followed by a magical super-race called the Tuatha de Danaan (the people of the goddess Dana).

Most interestingly, the book says that the group which then came to Ireland and fully established itself as rulers of the island were the Milesians – the sons of Mil, the soldier from Spain. Modern DNA research has actually confirmed that the Irish are close genetic relatives of the people of northern Spain.

While it might seem strange that Ireland was populated from Spain rather than Britain or France, it is worth remembering that in ancient times the sea was one of the fastest and easiest ways to travel. When the land was covered in thick forest, coastal settlements were common and people travlleled around the seaboard of Europe quite freely.

But where did the early Irish come from? For a long time the myth of Irish history has been that the Irish are Celts. Many people still refer to Irish, Scottish and Welsh as Celtic culture – and the assumtion has been that they were Celts who migrated from central Europe around 500BCE. Keltoi was the name given by the Ancient Greeks to a ‘barbaric’ (in their eyes) people who lived to the north of them in central Europe. While early Irish art shows some similarities of style to central European art of the Keltoi, historians have also recognised many significant differences between the two cultures.

The latest research into Irish DNA has confirmed that the early inhabitants of Ireland were not directly descended from the Keltoi of central Europe. In fact the closest genetic relatives of the Irish in Europe are to be found in the north of Spain in the region known as the Basque Country. These same ancestors are shared to an extent with the people of Britain – especially the Scottish.

DNA testing through the male Y chromosome has shown that Irish males have the highest incidence of the haplogroup 1 gene in Europe. While other parts of Europe have integrated contiuous waves of new settlers from Asia, Ireland’s remote geographical position has meant that the Irish gene-pool has been less susceptible to change. The same genes have been passed down from parents to children for thousands of years.

This is mirrored in genetic studies which have compared DNA analysis with Irish surnames. Many surnames in Irish are Gaelic surnames, suggesting that the holder of the surname is a descendant of people who lived in Ireland long before the English conquests of the Middle Ages. Men with Gaelic surnames, showed the highest incidences of Haplogroup 1 (or Rb1) gene. This means that those Irish whose ancestors pre-date English conquest of the island are direct descendants of early stone age settlers who migrated from Spain.

Haplogroups are assigned letters of the alphabet, and refinements consist of additional number and letter combinations, for example R1b or R1b1. Y-chromosome and mitochondrial DNA haplogroups have different haplogroup designations. In essence, haplogroups give an inisight into ancestral origins dating back thousands of years.

An Update on the aftermath of the Ninth Circle disruptions and arrests of April 30

All of our special action teams have reported in. This Communique is a compilation of their separate reports, excluding information that must be kept confidential for now in the interest of the safety of children or witnesses, or impending legal action.

1.      The nineteen cult members arrested by our teams and local police in Zwolle Holland, Dijon France and Lucerne Switzerland are presently in custody in police facilities in those cities. We do not know if the detained have been formally charged by local prosecutors yet. However, the police recovered considerable evidence of cult activity at the arrest sites, including Satanic regalia, blood-marked torture devices and children’s clothing, and in the case of the Zwolle site even the physical remains of dead and mutilated children held in cold room containers.

2.      Our teams in these three towns have retained their own record of this evidence, including the photographs and recorded statements of the cult members. Some of them have positively identified more senior members of the Ninth Circle cult, including Catholic Cardinals and European Union politicians and military leaders. One of the arrested men, who claims to be a secondary level leader of the cult, has agreed that for certain benefits he will provide detailed evidence against the cult including by naming those who are heading its organization.

3.      The eight children who were liberated and saved by our teams in these three towns have either been returned to their families of origin, if they were kidnapped from them, or held under protection in independent safe houses until they can be relocated with safe and caring families. Three of the children were immigrants from Romania or Tunisia, and five were native to France and Holland. None of them were older than six years old. They are all still in a state of shock and recovery after having been starved and beaten, and confined in small padlocked cages that were recovered in our raids.

4.      The teams in the other cities, save Washington DC and Montreal and Vancouver Canada, have had nothing else to report besides the general fact that the cult sites they had targeted were heavily protected by paramilitary personnel. However, our sources tell us that their ritual killings were relocated or suspended as a result of the announced disruptions. These other cities were Rome, London, Paris, Frankfurt, Brussels and Geneva. The suspected Ninth Circle ritual at the Opus Dei centre in Tara, Ireland was also suspended and no activity was detected there.

5.      Three of our action teams, in Vancouver and Montreal Canada and Washington DC, were halted and arrested by plain clothed security forces who refused to show any identification. All of our team members were released the next day except for one individual in Vancouver who remains incommunicado. We assume the cult killings in these cities – in a sub-basement crypt at the Vancouver Club, in a sub-basement hall at Marie Reine du Monde Cathedral in Montreal and within the interior of the St. John’s Episcopal Church near the White House – proceeded as scheduled.

6.      The day after these raids our Executive received a back-channel communication from a party claiming to represent “an element” within the Roman Catholic Curia, the so-called College of Cardinals. This party carried a message requesting a meeting between “influential officials” at the Vatican and the ITCCS leadership. We have stated to this messenger that any such meeting must occur outside Italy and be subject to monitoring and recording in the presence of our security staff and legal counsel. We are awaiting a reply.

7.      One of our sources close to the Ninth Circle leadership has indicated that the Circle is moving its dual headquarters from the Club Lorraine in Brussels and a private chateau in Belgium to an undisclosed location in North America. This shift may explain the rapid shut down of our North American teams. We have also learned that Cardinal Gerald Lacroix of Quebec, the senior Roman Catholic official in Canada who was appointed to that position by the criminally convicted Pope Benedict / Joseph Ratzinger, was present during March of this year at secret high level coven gatherings of the Ninth Circle in Brussels and Rome. Both Lacroix and Ratzinger were reported to be active participants in a Ninth Circle ritual killing of a young boy on February 22, 2014 at the San Lorenzo Jesuit Church in Rome along with Pope Francis, Jorge Bergoglio, and Denis Lebel, a federal cabinet minister in the Canadian government of former Prime Minister Stephen Harper. 8.      In response to our actions, police and judges associated with the Ninth Circle have escalated their attacks on our organization and clinical counselors allied with us who have diagnosed and publicly named Satanic Ritual crimes. Three of these counselors (in Canada, the USA and England) are now suddenly facing professional discipline and possible criminal charges, along with the usual public smear campaigns. But of related and even greater concern is that our top Field Secretaries have been targeted for elimination by the Ninth Circle. Here are the details:

9.      Our Ninth Circle source reports a “private” discussion of the top Ninth Circle leaders that occurred on May 2 in Rome. The details were passed on by a disenchanted Catholic priest who is placed closely to a senior Cardinal and Ninth Circle member. At this private meeting it was stated that the highest priority for the Circle had to be “eliminating” once and for all the operational leaders of the ITCCS, namely the three Field Secretaries for North America, Europe and Australia. The latter include Kevin Annett, “John Street” and the Australian secretary. Our source was unable to discover whether the Vatican’s normal channel for assassinations – the espionage agency known as the Holy Alliance – would be handling these killings or whether they would go to contracted “local assets” from their partner the Mafia Ndrangheta. Regardless, since of our Field Secretaries Mr. “Street” and Kevin Annett have been especially public and visible leaders of our campaigns, their safety is of the highest importance. We have directed them and the Australian Field Secretary to go underground for now and to follow the normal protocols of those who are in protective custody.

10.   These expected counter-attacks are in fact a sign that the Ninth Circle and its Vatican/corporate backers are beginning to panic and are resorting to fearful self-defensiveness. We expect more cracks to appear in the ranks of their cult and for more defectors and informants to emerge. We are optimistic that this murderous three century old Jesuit cult is in collapse, which means that our efforts must intensify.

11.   We urge all people of conscience to join us, receive common law Sheriff training, and mobilize your communities to arrest the Catholic clergy and others who are funding and aiding the Ninth Circle. The farce came as police probe incredible claims that the former prime minister was linked to a paedophile ring that killed as many as 16 children – which would make them the worst child murderers in British history.

The seemingly far-fetched allegations have been made by a family who allege that the politician was part of a satanic sex cult run by their own parents.

They say that the cult regularly slaughtered children as ritual sacrifices in churches and forests around southern England and also participated in similar ceremonies in Africa.

They claim their mother and father – who is said to have known the former Conservative leader – were responsible for slaughtering children ranging from babies to teenagers – yet they evaded justice.

The paedophile ring – which they say Sir Edward was part of – stabbed, tortured and maimed youngsters in churches and burnt babies in satanic orgies before men, women and children gorged themselves on blood and body parts, police have been told.

 If the bizarre allegations were to be proved, the parents who allegedly led the killings would be responsible for murdering more children than Fred and Rose West.

They would also be on a par with Thomas Hamilton, who shot dead 16 children in the 1996 Dunblane school massacre.

The women’s lurid claims were dismissed by police in 1989 when they came forward. Sir Edward’s name was never mentioned to police at the time. It was only last year that he was named for the first time after one of the claimants said she had ‘remembered’ a man called ‘Ed’ was a prime mover in a network of paedophile abusers.

But there is no suggestion that Sir Edward killed any children himself in the women’s accounts.

Wiltshire Police have spent more than a year investigating the allegations as part of an inquiry that has cost taxpayers over £883,431 and irretrievably tarnished the reputation of the unmarried politician, who died in 2005, aged 89.

Last night Sir Edward’s godson, Lincoln Seligman, said: ‘I understand that these claims from the 1980s were at the time dismissed as complete fantasy by police. It is disappointing that these wild allegations have been reheated and randomly attached to Edward Heath’s name.’

A Wiltshire Police spokesman said: ‘We are not prepared to discuss this as this is an on-going investigation.’

GODSON HITS OUT AT CHIEF’S CLAIM

The godson of Sir Edward Heath reacted angrily yesterday after it was claimed that a police chief is ‘120 per cent’ sure that sex abuse allegations against the former prime minister are genuine.

Wiltshire Chief Constable Mike Veale was reported to believe child abuse allegations against the late politician – which include lurid tales of satanic child slaughter – are ‘totally convincing’.

Mr Veale, whose force has been investigating the claims for 18 months, is also said to believe that Sir Edward was a paedophile whose crimes were covered up.

Police have established that, contrary to claims that Sir Edward could not have committed the crimes because he never drove a car and always had a police driver with him, he did drive and once had a car.

But the claims have infuriated Sir Edward’s godson, who dismissed it as a ‘PR hustle of some sort’ by the Wiltshire force ahead of an official report into the investigation. Lincoln Seligman, who has described the probe as a ‘witch-hunt’, has questioned how police can say the allegations are true, just on the basis that he may have driven a car.

The police chief investigating claims that Sir Edward Heath was a paedophile is convinced the allegations are ‘120 per cent’ genuine, The Mail on Sunday can reveal.

More than 30 people have come forward with claims of sexual abuse by the former Conservative Prime Minister, according to well-placed sources. 

And they are said to have given ‘strikingly similar’ accounts of incidents to Wiltshire Police – even though the individuals are not known to each other.

The Mail on Sunday has been told that Wiltshire Chief Constable Mike Veale regards the allegations as ‘totally convincing’, and plans to publish a report in June.

Detectives have established that, contrary to claims that Sir Edward could not have committed the crimes as he ‘never drove a car’ and ‘always’ had a police driver with him, he did drive – and did have a car.

They have photographic evidence that shows he is a driver, and have established that he had a driving licence. He also bought a Rover 2000 after being deposed as Tory leader by Margaret Thatcher in 1975, when he was 58.

However, The Mail on Sunday has been told that Mr Veale believes the paedophile allegations are genuine. A source said: ‘Mr Veale believes in them 120 per cent and thinks they are totally convincing.

‘There are very close similarities in the accounts given by those who have come forward. The same names used for him, the same places and same type of incidents keep coming up.

‘What stands out is that the people giving these accounts are not connected but the stories and the details dovetail.

‘It contains disturbing stuff. Investigators have been shocked by what they have learned.’

Another source said: ‘The police were initially sceptical about the allegations, but now believe them. And they have come round to the view that they were covered up in the past because of who Heath was.

These are the photographs that appear to disprove the notion that the allegations against Sir Edward cannot be true because he ‘never drove a car’ and was always accompanied by police.

Both were taken in October 1975. In the main picture on the right, Heath is standing by the driver’s door of the Rover 2000 he bought after Margaret Thatcher ousted him as Tory leader in February that year. In the picture on the left, he is seen arriving at the Tory Party conference in Blackpool – in the driver’s seat.

The Mail on Sunday has learned that Wiltshire Police has also obtained photographic evidence of him driving.

The issue was first raised by former Cabinet Secretary Lord Armstrong, who worked with Sir Edward in No 10. Lord Armstrong said Sir Edward – whom he described as ‘asexual’ – had a 24-hour police guard and driver from the day he became PM in 1970 to his death in 2005, and did not have his own car.

‘When he was at home he had two policemen on the gate, he had the personal protection officer from Scotland Yard in the house, he never drove a car himself, he always had an official driver,’ said Lord Armstrong. ‘It seems highly unlikely he could have escaped all that to do the kind of thing that is described.’

Sir Edward bought the Rover after losing the chauffeur-driven car he was entitled to as Prime Minister, then Opposition leader.

A confidant of the former PM said: ‘He definitely could and did drive, though was a notoriously bad one. When he went to music concerts in Salzburg and hired a car, he was meant to drive it because his British police guards weren’t officially allowed to.

‘But they insisted as they were frightened he was going to crash.’

‘They will not be deflected by the rich and powerful trying to do the same now. Mike Veale is doing a great job and should be congratulated for his courage.’

The disclosures come after several senior politicians dismissed the allegations against Heath as absurd and unfounded. Former Tory Foreign Secretary Sir Malcolm Rifkind complained Heath’s reputation was being ‘besmirched’. Heath’s sexuality has been the source of much speculation over the years. Some believed he was gay, others said he was ‘asexual.’ At one point, he was being investigated by no fewer than five police forces – the Met, Wiltshire, Hampshire, Kent and Jersey.

The claims, some of which have been proved false, include alleged links to a convicted brothel keeper known as Madame Ling-Ling. A paedophile dossier compiled by Labour peer Baroness Castle said he offered young boys trips on his yacht, and in a separate incident one man claimed Sir Edward picked him up hitchhiking in Kent as a 12-year-old in the 1960s and lured him to his Mayfair flat.

Labour MP Tom Watson also said he had received allegations about Sir Edward. However the claims Mr Veale is investigating, which date from the 1960s to 1990s, are not linked to the discredited evidence of the man known as ‘Nick’, who alleged a high-level paedophile ring.

One of the key counter-claims made when the allegations first surfaced came from former Cabinet Secretary Lord Armstrong, who worked with Heath when he was Prime Minister. He said Heath ‘never drove a car’ and always had at least one policeman with him from 1970 until his death in 2005.

The fact that Sir Edward could drive was confirmed last night by a friend, who said the former Prime Minister bought a car in 1975, although Sir Edward was later given a chauffeur-driven car and police guard after IRA death threats. 

Asked if Mr Veale believed the allegations against Sir Edward were ‘totally convincing’, a police spokesman said the Chief Constable was determined to ‘ensure the investigation is proportionate, measured and legal’ and that the job of the police was to ‘impartially investigate allegations without fear or favour and go where the evidence takes us. It is not the role of the police to judge the guilt or innocence of people in our criminal justice system.’

Further asked if Mr Veale had ‘120 per cent’ faith in the allegations, the spokesman declined to comment.

Launched in 2015 to investigate allegations against Sir Edward Heath, Operation Conifer has been dogged by claims that it traduces the reputation of a Prime Minister who died more than a decade ago and could not be put on trial.

The operation, which has a staff of 17 and has run up a bill approaching £1 million, did not get off to a good start when Wiltshire Chief Constable Mike Veale had to apologise for launching it in front of cameras outside Sir Edward’s former house, Arundells, in Salisbury.

Demands to call it off grew last November when Scotland Yard was forced to abandon its Operation Midland investigation into similar claims of a VIP paedophile ring in Westminster. 

After a flurry of false accusations, Commissioner Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe apologised to former Defence chief Lord Bramall, ex-Tory MP Harvey Proctor, DJ Paul Gambaccini and Lady Brittan, widow of the late Lord Brittan.

Pressure on Operation Conifer mounted after this newspaper revealed how an expert, brought in by police to assess claims that Heath was linked to paedophiles who held satanic orgies, dismissed them as fantasy.

Days after The Mail on Sunday report, Mr Veale came out fighting and insisted Operation Conifer was not a ‘witch-hunt’. 

In a surprise statement released on December 2, he said he refused to ‘buckle’ to demands to abandon the inquiry, and stressed his officers had not spoken to ‘Nick’, the man at the root of Operation Midland.

The Heath investigation was not a ‘fishing trip’, he said, adding that he was ‘duty-bound’ to go ahead with it ‘without fear or favour and go where the evidence takes us’.

He accused his critics of ignorance, and rebuked them for using ‘inappropriate and unacceptable pressure’ in an attempt to halt the inquiry.

Mr Veale said a ‘significant number of individuals’ had alleged abuse, but refused to say how many or give details of the only two people to be arrested.

He even said the findings of the investigation may never be made public, stating: ‘A confidential closing report will be written… and at that time I will take advice as to what I can legally put in the public domain.’ 

Police were ‘testing, checking and challenging the evidence and ensuring our approach is proportionate and justified’, he said.

Mr Veale argues that although Sir Edward died in 2005, other offenders may still be alive and victims could require support. 

‘If the force had received allegations of non-recent child abuse against a former Prime Minister and done nothing, what would the reaction have been?’

Lincoln Seligman, Sir Edward’s godson, responded to Mr Veale’s December statement by saying: ‘If they have uncovered no evidence after 18 months they should say so. 

And if Conifer is wound up, [Sir Edward] deserves to be exonerated as publicly as he was initially smeared. Shuffling the inquiry’s findings off into the night is not acceptable.’

Other aspects of Operation Conifer have also come under fire. Wiltshire Police interviewed key figures at Private Eye because the satirical magazine joked about unmarried Sir Edward’s sexuality 40 years ago.

They wanted to know if its nickname for him, ‘Sailor Ted’, in his days as PM from 1970 to 1974, was a reference to rumours that he was gay.

Police even asked current editor Ian Hislop what he knew about Heath, despite Hislop being a teenager during the period under investigation.

Officers have also tracked down former Downing Street staff to ask them if young men were ever sneaked into No 10.

Times writer and ex-Tory MP Matthew Parris dismissed the allegations, saying: ‘If Heath was a child abuser, I’m an aardvark.’

The door didn’t open again until Iranian physicist, Mehran T. Keshe came to us with his own story. Invited to Belgium, sponsored by the Royal Family, Keshe was introduced to internet guru Sterling Allen and Belgian “fixer,” Dirk Lauressens. Within a short time, it became clear that he was there as a prisoner, not a guest, having fallen into a web of pedophiles that control public life in Belgium and the Netherlands, control corporations, courts, the police and do so rather publicly.

With Keshe’s story, we traced Sterling Allen, through his work with Belgium’s Royal Family, to his questioning by the FBI, to the seizure of his computers and eventually to his real task in life, webmaster for a massive pedophile ring that supplied children for the members of secret societies that control our daily lives through suppression of technology and the waging of endless war.

An Internet pedophile ring with up to 70,000 members — thought to be the world’s largest —has been uncovered by police, a security official said Wednesday.

The European police agency Europol said in a statement that “Operation Rescue” had identified 670 suspects and that 230 abused children in 30 countries had been taken to safety. More children are expected to be found, Europol said.

A pedophile ring, 70,000 strong, has been identified and hundreds arrested, an organization run on the internet, centered in the Free Energy Community, including websites run out of Paris, the Netherlands and Belgium.

 Massive European Online Child Abuse Network Exposed

The investigation uncovered how well-known online apps such as Skype and chat and live stream sites allowed the selling of child pornography.

A major operation by the European Police Office into an online network sexually exploiting children has led to the arrests of 75 people and 207 criminal cases across Europe, Europol officials said Tuesday. “Operation Daylight” was first launched in 2015 after Europol received “intelligence packages” from police in Switzerland about network of online child abuse images.

The investigation uncovered how well-known online apps such as Skype and chat and live stream sites allowed the selling of child pornography. Offenders often used sophisticated encryption methods to hide their activities on the so called “darknet,” a notorious online network where illegal activities commonly take place.

Online currencies such as BitCoin were often used as payment for activities related to online child sexual abuse. The “intelligence packages” gave Europol investigators information such as IP addresses which allowed them to further open up illegal networks and catch offenders across Europe.

“We know that individuals are abusing online platforms and networks to distribute child sexual abuse material and we are determined to target them and bring them to justice,” said Steven Wilson from Europol’s European Cybercrime Centre in a press release. Seventy-five arrests were made in 28 European countries with a number of the suspects already being prosecuted in ongoing investigations. Italian police also revealed that the investigation had led them to the arrests of five people and 16 people being reported to the magistrate.

In a statement, Italian police said that all suspects had no previous criminal activity and were classed as “above suspicion,” with all aged 50 and above.

Europol has not yet released information related to individual countries and is continuing to carry out its investigations. Source

Church failed to pass Peter Ball abuse evidence to police 11 July 2016

Church leaders failed to give police incriminating evidence about disgraced former Bishop Peter Ball in 1993, according to Sussex police documents.

Ball, 84, was jailed last year for sex assaults on 18 teenagers and young men in the 1970s, 80s and 90s.

Files obtained by the BBC indicate Lambeth Palace received six letters detailing indecency allegations shortly after an arrest in 1992.

Ball was cautioned but worked in churches and schools for 15 more years.

Richard Scorer, a lawyer at Slater and Gordon, said: “It’s an absolute scandal. It is wrong and unacceptable that the Church of England sat on the information and didn’t pass it to the police.

“There is no question Peter Ball would have been prosecuted, convicted and jailed for child abuse at that time.”

The Church of England has declined to comment.

Peter BallBall was Bishop of Lewes between 1977 and 1992 and Bishop of Gloucester from 1992 until his resignation the following year

Former Archbishop of Canterbury Lord Carey told the BBC last year that he had placed Peter Ball on a list of priests banned from the ministry.

But Sussex police documents, released under an Freedom of Information (FOI) request, suggest Ball’s name was not included.

The documents also indicate Ball associated with other sex offenders in the clergy and that he was investigated in 2008 for being part of a suspected paedophile ring.

The police files also suggest Ball covered for and helped other priests accused of sex abuse, including:

  • In 1978, Ball failed to take appropriate action against a priest who abused a child and went on to abuse others.
  • In 1985, Ball let a priest who had abused a 14-year-old boy stay in his home after his release from prison, and provided the abuser with a positive report enabling him to return to work.
  • In 2009, Ball tried to persuade a teenage boy to apologise to a priest who had allegedly abused him.

Analysis by BBC South East Special Correspondent Colin Campbell:

These files give a further insight into how the church handled Ball’s case. It seems the Diocese of Chichester did not share documents which could have jailed Ball earlier.

There is no explanation about how he was able to gain a clear Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) check, so he could continue working in the church.

The documents reveal Bishop Peter Ball considered asking the home secretary to overturn his caution in the 1990s.

They also detail the “limited disciplinary action” taken by the-then Archbishop of Canterbury Lord Carey in relation to Ball and “his return to ministry”.

In February, it was announced Dame Moira Gibb was chairing an independent review of the Ball case to consider what information was available to the Church of England, who had it and when.

Chilcot: International Criminal Court says it will not investigate Tony Blair – but might prosecute soldiers

Court says decision to invade is outside its remit but will use report to look at evidence of soldiers’ human rights abuses Tony Blair will not be put on trial for war crimes but British soldiers could be, prosecutors at the International Criminal Court have said.

Ahead of the long-awaited publication of the Chilcot report on Wednesday, lawyers at the court have ruled out prosecuting the former prime minister for war crimes because it says the decision to go to war is outside its remit.

Instead the ICC says lawyers will comb through the 2.6 million word document for evidence of war crimes committed by British troops during the war. The decision has outraged the families of the 179 British soldiers who were killed during the eight year conflict. They blame Mr Blair for dragging the UK into the war under false pretences.


 

In a statement to the Sunday Telegraph, the ICC said it had begun a “preliminary examination” of claims of abuse by British soldiers from human rights lawyers on behalf of Iraqi victims.

A spokesperson for the Office of the Prosecutor at the ICC in The Hague said: “We will take note of the Chilcot report when released in the context of its ongoing preliminary examination work concerning Iraq/UK.

“A preliminary examination is not an investigation but a process aimed at determining whether reasonable basis exist to open an investigation.

“As already indicated by the Office in 2006, the ‘decision by the UK to go to war in Iraq falls outside the Court’s jurisdiction’.” The statement said the court was considering introducing a “crime of aggression” to deal with illegal invasions but stressed they could not apply it retroactively.

Roger Bacon, whose son Matt was killed by a roadside bomb in 2005, condemned the court’s stance.

He told the Telegraph: “It is outrageous. It is double standards.

“These soldiers have gone out to do their best for us and here they are being hounded and yet the guy who took them there is not being looked at. “That is completely wrong and disgusting.”

Last year, Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said Mr Blair could be made to stand trial over the war – saying he believed the invasion was illegal.

He said: “We went into a war that was catastrophic, that was illegal, that cost us a lot of money, that lost a lot of lives. “The consequences are still played out with migrant deaths in the Mediterranean, refugees all over the region.

Speaking on Sky News’ Murnaghantoday, Mr Blair said: “I have said many times over these past years I will wait for the report then I will make my views know and I will express myself fully and properly.

“I’m not getting into the politics or the detail of it before we actually get it”.

He has repeatedly denied lying in the run-up to the invasion in May 2003. In October 2015, he apologised for “mistakes” in the planning of the operation and said the intelligence they received was wrong but told CNN he found “it hard to apologise for removing Saddam”.

He compared the invasion of Iraq with inaction in Syria saying the West had stood back while hundreds of thousands of people had been killed by President Bashar al-Assad and Isis.

An estimated 460,000 Iraqi civilians were killed in the conflict after a US-led invasion toppled the regime of Saddam Hussein in 2003.

The occupation officially ended in 2011 but the UK began operations in the country once more in 2014 to help Iraqi forces push back Isis which rose to prominence in the political vacuum following withdrawal

POLICE are being urged to probe Sir Clement Freud’s links to Madeleine McCann after the late broadcaster and politician was exposed as a paedophile.

The former Liberal MP, who died in 2009, owned a villa in Praia da Luz – close to where Maddie went missing when she was three-years-old.

Freud also hosted her parents Kate and Gerry McCann on two separate occasions.

It was revealed earlier this week that Freud, who first invited the McCanns to his Portuguese villa two months after their daughter went missing, spent years sexually abusing girls as young as 10.

Writing in her book Madeleine, Kate McCann said: “I’m embarrassed to admit that Gerry and I thought this letter was a hoax.”

She added: “I’m usually very intimidated by people with brains the size of planets but Clement was incredibly warm, funny and instantly likeable. Clement cheered us up with his lugubrious wit, and would continue to do so by email after his return to England. Thank God for people like Clement who kept us smiling.”

The McCanns visited Freud again on the night they were formally made suspects in the investigation in 2007.

Kate McCann wrote: “We found Clement watching a cookery programme, dressed, as promised, in his nightshirt.

“It was so ordinary and comforting, a bit like going to see your granddad after a horrible day at school.

“He gave me one of his looks and a giant glass of brandy, and managed to get a smile out of me with his greeting: ‘So, Kate, which of the devout Catholic, alcoholic, depressed, nymphomaniac parts is correct?’

“His response to our catalogue of horrors was merely to raise an eyebrow.

“Clement had this way of making everything seem a little less terrible.”

Kate went on to explain how Freud commented on the sniffer dogs which led police to treat the McCanns as suspects. 

She wrote: “When he heard about the dogs, he remarked laconically: ‘So what are they going to do? Put them on the stand? One bark for yes, two for no?’

“He was right, of course; it was ridiculous. A couple of hours later, fortified by our brandies (it was my first-ever taste of the stuff), some useful snippets of advice and several amusing anecdotes, we left our friend feeling quite a bit better than we had when we’d arrived.”

A spokesperson for the McCann family said they had not been aware of Freud’s child abuse.

Former murder squad detective Colin Sutton said: “If this is something that investigators had not been aware of then it would be certainly a potential line of inquiry that would be worth pursuing.

“It is not something that ought to be taken lightly and you would also want to look any connections he may have had in the area at the time.” SOURCE Express

The greatest skill of the late Sir Clement Freud was never to reveal what he was thinking. Friends would say that you could look him straight in the eyes and they would give nothing away.

Someone else had that ability — fellow Knight of the Realm Jimmy Savile. And now, it seems, Sir Clement, once one of the most popular and enduring figures in broadcasting and public life, was also hiding paJedophile secrets.

Tonight’s ITV programme has a woman in her late 70s, Sylvia Woosley, claiming that from the age of ten she was ‘groomed and abused’ by Freud. Another woman makes similar allegations adding there could be ‘thousands more’.

The allegations will dismay Freud’s many friends and millions of fans. But they have elicited no protest of his innocence from his widow Lady Freud, the actress Jill Raymond — born June Flewett — now 89.

Instead, in the film she apologises ‘for what has happened to these woman’, expressing her shock, and her deep sorrow. Given the shocking nature of the revelations, it is almost unbearable now to repeat the tribute to the amusingly lugubrious Freud — a Liberal MP for 14 years — given by his friend Gordon Brown after Freud’s death seven years ago.

‘Sir Clement Freud made a huge contribution to public life in many different ways,’ declared the then Prime Minister, who got to know Freud when he was Rector of the University of Edinburgh and Freud was Rector of Dundee University.

‘I was proud to have known him and the whole country should recognise the achievements in his life.’

Eight days later, at the funeral at St Bride’s, in Fleet Street, Brown read the lesson from St John’s Gospel and gave an address to a starry congregation that included Stephen Fry, rock star Bono and an assortment of Freud’s fellow panellists from Radio 4’s enduring panel game Just a Minute, in which he said: ‘He was more than a national treasure, he was a national institution.’

Until now, this was how practically everyone viewed Freud — the dry, acerbic, self-deprecating, achingly pessimistic figure the public adored.

Clement Freud — Clay to his friends — was one of those people who seem to have been placed on earth to remind everyone that it’s not all bad. His method of doing so was to insist, however, that it was.

His was the measured, slightly mocking, funereal voice on Just a Minute that audiences most wanted to hear. No wonder he appeared in every episode of the popular programme through 42 series from its inception in 1968 until he died. To listeners desperate for nostalgia, he was the embodiment of old-fashioned and slightly mannered attitudes.

Who but Clement Freud could have taken on the hopeless constituency of the Isle of Ely for the Liberals in 1973 — and won it? He wanted to beat the Conservatives but couldn’t bring himself to stand for Labour.

With the bookies quoting odds of 33-1 against him, the famous gambling man put a £1,000 on himself — and won. One way or another, the overweight, almost Pickwickian Freud always appeared to be in crackling, curmudgeonly form.

He was a familiar, larger-than-life figure punting heavily at the races (visitors to his Marylebone flat were invariably shown the copy of a bookmaker’s cheque of £70,420.45 for his winnings which he kept in a frame on the wall), often with wife Jill on his arm.

Here was an ostensibly happy marriage that produced five children (and nearly 20 grandchildren) including multi-millionaire PR guru Matthew Freud, whose former wife was Rupert Murdoch’s daughter Elisabeth.

Matthew has certainly followed the family’s dissolute, libidinous path. While married to his second wife Elisabeth, with whom he has a son and a daughter, he had another child with one of her close friends. Elisabeth even cradled the child in her arms, not knowing the father was her husband.

Friends said she was furious that he had ‘betrayed’ her. They were divorced in 2014, two years after the child was born.

Another of Clement’s children is Emma Freud, TV presenter and partner of Four Weddings And A Funeral filmmaker Richard Curtis.Emma and Matthew’s other siblings were Nicola, Dominic and Ashley.

But behind the public image there were dark secrets. One emerged 15 years ago when author Jonathan ‘Joss’ Self, a friend of the Freuds and brother of the writer Will Self, revealed in a memoir, Self Harm, that he was only 16 years when he started an affair with a married woman who was 30 years his senior.

He named her only as ‘June’ and it went on for five years until he met his first wife. June is, of course, the real first name of Jill Freud, and it soon emerged that she was the married women involved.

(Incidentally, she is said to have been C. S. Lewis’s inspiration for the character of Lucy in the Narnia stories — in World War II she was evacuated to Oxford and was taken in by Lewis and his lover Jane Moore.)

Self wrote of the affair with Freud: ‘I learned an awful lot, for me the experience was all positive . . . June taught and I learned; she nurtured and I grew; sometimes, with the callous indifference of a teenager I inadvertently hurt her. I loved June and she loved me. Nevertheless, despite the strength and depth of our feelings for each other, we both understood the impossibility of our situation . . .

‘There was no question of deceiving June’s husband as they had an “open” marriage . . . Although he and I never discussed the subject, he was fully aware with how things stood between his wife and me. Indeed, he treated me as a member of their family, offering me support, advice and even financial assistance.

‘Over time, the two of us developed a lasting and quite separate, if somewhat unconventional, friendship of our own.’

As for Freud himself, friends said he was not bothered by what happened between Joss and Jill — he once joked the secret to a long marriage was ‘several houses’ — and he dismissed it as ‘just tittle-tattle’.

At his home in Cork, in the West of Ireland yesterday, Joss Self, now 55, brother of the oh-so-opinionated, fashionable writer and commentator Will Self, declined to add anything about the Freud’s ‘open’ marriage on the grounds that ‘it’s all in the past’.

But just how ‘open’ the marriage was is bound to be a key question in the light of tonight’s revelations.

In her astonishing testimony, Sylvia Woosley — who met the Freuds with her wayward mother in the South of France in 1948, and was taken in by them in London in 1952 when her mother decamped to Ibiza — describes a morning when she joined the couple for breakfast in their bed. She was 14.

When Mrs Freud got up to make the breakfast, Sylvia offered to help, but Jill Freud told her to ‘stay where you are with Clay’.

She says: ‘I knew what was going to happen. I was in my nightdress, and he pulls it up and pulls me against him, touching me and kissing me.’

Who could have imagined that such a depraved scene could be played out by a man admired in so many ways. But then, Clement Freud’s studied unflappability masked an incredibly complex family background which already encompassed dysfunction, feud and infidelity.

How bitterly ironic that the family would have made an intriguing study for Freud’s grandfather Sigmund Freud, the father of psychoanalysis who believed that sexual energy was the driving force behind our behaviour.

Sigmund and his family fled from Hitler’s Nazis to London in 1933 and, arriving in London, settled in Hampstead where he continued to develop his theories.

But the great Sigmund merited a mere two pages in Clement’s autobiography, Freud Ego, in which he describes, as a boy in Berlin being taken on a family visit to see his grandfather in Vienna. Later, in London, he would have tea with him.

Sigmund died in 1939, mercifully unaware of the bitterness that would divide his three grandsons, Clement, and brothers Stephen, who became an ironmonger in London, and Lucian, the infamous artist who womanised on an industrial scale.

Sigmund would perhaps have traced the roots of their enmity back to their childhood of considerable domestic comfort in which the brothers had a full-time nanny, all made possible because their mother was rich.

Clement — whose architect father Ernst was Sigmund’s son — recorded in his memoir: ‘My mother was very beautiful and fairly distant. When she came into the nursery she nodded to Stephen and me, and sat down with Lucian and whispered. They had secrets. I did not realise for many years that this is not what good mothers do.’

Just how these memories incubated in Clement’s mind — and in his brothers’ — one can only speculate about. But tragically, when Clay died the three had not talked to each other for some years.

Lucian, who died in 2011 aged 88, was to become probably the world’s greatest living painter, whose works now sell for millions.

But his fame as an artist is rivalled by his rampant reputation with women — he is known to have fathered 14 children, two of them with his first wife and 12 with five mistresses — though it is rumoured he had up to 40 children.

The fraternal rift was so deep that when Lucian was offered a knighthood, he openly admitted he turned it down because Clement already had one. ‘I have the OM (Order of Merit) which is senior,’ he boasted.

So how did this bad blood come about? There are two stories. One tells of Lucian challenging Clement to a race around Green Park.

Clement was in the lead when his brother cried out: ‘Stop thief, he’s stolen my money.’ As passers-by grabbed hold of the younger man, Lucian swept by to win the race. The two never spoke again.

The second story concerns Lucian’s gambling debts of £19,000 in 1955, when Clement was running a nightclub at the Royal Court Theatre in London’s Sloane Square.

According to Clement, when his brother arrived at the club seeking a loan, he kept him waiting and then turned him down. ‘I loved Lucian without liking him,’ said Freud years later. ‘There came a point where love was too painful and the dislike sufficient to say it really would be more sensible to end this relationship.’

For his part, Stephen, the ironmonger, saw himself as the ‘forgotten Freud’ while Clement simply dismissed their relationship as ‘not very close’. As for Clement Freud’s career, it was not exactly meteoric.

His celebrity happened by accident. No great scholar, he left St Paul’s school to become an apprentice chef at the Dorchester hotel in Park Lane when he was 16.

There he saw in the new year of 1942 with ten portions of Beluga caviar and a bottle of Dom Perignon pilfered from his employer — an evening that would give him a taste for high living and set a high bar for his culinary ambitions.

Conscripted into the Royal Ulster Rifles, he was a liaison officer at the Nuremberg war crimes trials after World War II.

From there he turned to cooking and sports writing and, being good with words in an age when TV chefs were in their infancy, he soon found himself dispensing advice on-screen in Freud On Food.

When Eamonn Andrews invited him on to his ITV chat show in 1964, Freud’s doom-laden style was an instant hit.

But it was another four years before he became a star, and for this he always acknowledged the debt he owed to Henry the bloodhound.

As a TV chef and gourmet, he had declined many offers to endorse foods because he knew it could compromise his professional integrity. But dog food was different.

The ads he made in three days with Henry for Minced Morsels earned him £45,000 (£750,000 today) — and stardom.

Sir Clement Freud then managed to achieve the ultimate goal of every celebrity — the public’s affection. It is not difficult to know what Sylvia Woosley felt, watching it happen.

For her, his abuse, which began, remember, when she was just ten years old, ruined her life. There have been suicide attempts and bouts of depression.

‘I suppose it’s affected my behaviour all my life,’ she tells ITV.

‘I’ve been married twice, my relationships with men, my lack of trust, my lack of self-confidence, my self-destructions.’

Clement, knighted by Margaret Thatcher in 1987 when he lost his parliamentary seat, died of a heart attack while writing an article.

He always claimed to pooh-pooh his celebrity. Privately, he adored it. As with Jimmy Savile, the public affection will now turn to revulsion.

Sir Clement Freud, the former broadcaster and politician, was exposed on Tuesday night as a paedophile who sexually abused girls as young as 10 for decades.

Freud, who died in 2009, spent years abusing a girl who he brought up as a daughter, and violently raped a teenager while he was an MP.

His widow, Lady Freud, has apologised to his victims, saying she is “shocked, deeply saddened and profoundly sorry” for what her husband of 58 years did to them.

Detectives investigating the disappearance of Madeleine McCann have been alerted to the fact that Freud had a villa in Praia da Luz, Portugal, the resort where the three-year-old went missing in 2007.

He befriended the McCanns in the weeks after their daughter went missing, entertaining them at his house on two occasions and keeping in contact by phone and email.

The McCanns are said to be “horrified” by the discovery that Freud was a paedophile.

 
 

His family, who include the PR executive Matthew Freud, have said that Freud was not in Portugal at the time of Madeleine’s disappearance and that they have not been contacted by police.

However, officers from Operation Grange, the ongoing Metropolitan Police investigation into Madeleine’s disappearance, are expected to assess the new information before deciding if it may be relevant to the inquiry.

Freud was unmasked as a child sex abuser after one of his victims contacted ITV’s Exposure documentary team, who also broke the story of Jimmy Savile’s paedophilia four years ago.

 

Sylvia Woosley said Freud befriended her family in 1948, when he was working at a hotel in the South of France, and started abusing her when she was 10.

Four years later, following a family crisis, her mother asked Freud and his wife Jill if they would look after Mrs Woosley, and she found herself living under the same roof as her abuser, being brought up as a daughter. The abuse continued until she managed to move away when she was 19.

Another woman told ITV that Freud started abusing her in the 1970s, when she was 11, and eventually raped her when she was 18, by which time he was a Liberal MP sharing an office with Cyril Smith, who was also unmasked as a paedophile after his death. The rape was so brutal that his victim bled for a week.

Both women’s accounts have been passed on to the Metropolitan Police.

Lady Freud said: “This is a very sad day for me. I was married to Clement for 58 years and loved him dearly. I am shocked, deeply saddened and profoundly sorry for what has happened to these women. I sincerely hope they will now have some peace.”

Freud, who was knighted in 1987, was best known as a popular panellist on the Radio 4 show Just a Minute from 1967 until his death in 2009.

The grandson of the psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud and the brother of the painter Lucian Freud, he worked his way into the heart of British society, and when he died the then Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, was among the mourners at his funeral.

His five children include Matthew Freud and the broadcaster Emma Freud.

A spokesman for the McCann family said they had not until now been aware of Freud’s child abuse and were not aware that he had ever been investigated by Operation Grange.

His early life

The grandson of psychoanalyst, Sigmund Freud, and brother of artist Lucian, Clement was born in Berlin in 1924, but fled to Britain with his Jewish family when the Nazis came to power.

After the war he trained as a chef at London’s Dorchester, before being made manager of the glamorous Martinez Hotel in Cannes.

With his finger on the capital’s showbiz pulse he helped propel a number of young acts to stardom and later boasted of being the first person to book the now disgraced entertainer, Rolf Harris.

As one of the country’s first celebrity chefs he became a regular on TV and became a household name thanks to a series of dog food adverts in which he starred alongside a bloodhound called Henry.

He later moved into journalism before beginning a 14-year career in the House of Commons in 1973, where he shared an office with Cyril Smith, who was subsequently exposed as a serial paedophile.

Accusations of grooming and sexual abuse

Two separate women came forward to allege that he groomed and sexually abused them when they were young girls.

Freud spent years abusing a girl who he brought up as a daughter, and violently raped a teenager while he was an MP.

His widow, Lady Freud, has apologised to his victims.

Sylvia Woosley, who first met Freud when she was 10 and later went to live with him when her mother’s marriage broke down, claims in an ITV Exposure documentary that he molested her over several years.

A second woman, who wants to remain anonymous, alleged that the Liberal politician also abused her as a child and raped her when she was 18.

In a statement released in response to the programme, his widow Jill Freud, 89, said she was “deeply saddened and profoundly sorry for what has happened to these women”.

In the programme, due to be broadcast on Wednesday, Ms Woosley, now in her late 70s, said: “I just want to clear things up before I die…I want to die clean.

“Having been so hard on myself, trying to destroy myself so many times, you can’t bury the truth forever, it needs to be heard.

“I don’t want to take this to my tomb. I would like to just return to the child I was before I was molested physically, before I was introduced to that side of life too early.”

She told the programme s he first met Freud, known as Clay, when he was aged 24 and worked at the Martinez hotel in Cannes in the late 1940s. She was 10 and her family was living in the south of France.

Ms Woosley claims that he kissed her on the mouth during a bus trip. She said: “I was disgusted and helpless. I just didn’t react in any way because I couldn’t. I didn’t know what to do.”

From the age of 14, when she lived with Freud and his wife in London for five years, she claims that he frequently molested her, even “playfully” touching her breast in front of his wife, although she believes Mrs Freud had no knowledge of the abuse.

Later, aged in her early 40s, Ms Woosley said she confronted Freud at the House of Commons and asked why he had abused her. She says he replied: “Because I loved you. You were a very sensual little girl.”

The second woman said that she first met Freud in 1971 at her family home as a “lonely, neglected and socially isolated” 11-year-old.

Then a celebrity, he would call her on the phone and tell her she was special and intelligent, and was treated as a surrogate father figure by her parents, she said.

Two years later, after he was elected as an MP, he would take her on trips to Parliament and his home, and would kiss her on the mouth and hug her.

She said: “I felt sick but grateful at the same time. Frightened and unable to move or react in any way.”

When she was 14, she claims Freud asked her and another friend of the same age: “Would you like to get naked and have some fun?”

Four years later, in June 1978, when she was 18, the woman alleges that he came over to her parents’ flat and “brutally and perfunctorily” raped her.

She told the broadcaster: “I live in constant terror that I’ll be found out, exposed. I’ve already suffered across nearly 40 years. It’s not simply to be labelled as depression or mental illness, this is disempowerment, self-destructiveness and grief. This is what real suffering looks like.”

Writer, broadcaster and politician Freud, who died at his desk aged 84 in 2009, first became a household name in the 1960s and 70s in Minced Morsels dog food adverts.

A celebrated food, sport and comment print journalist, he also enjoyed a long career as a television and radio personality, regularly contributing to Radio 4’s Just A Minute for 30 years and featuring on shows including Have I Got News For You.

ITV said two of Freud’s children had viewed the documentary before broadcast on their mother’s behalf.

Mrs Freud said: “This is a very sad day for me. I was married to Clement for 58 years and loved him dearly. I am shocked, deeply saddened and profoundly sorry for what has happened to these women. I sincerely hope they will now have some peace.”

A spokesperson for the Liberal Democrats said: “These allegations are horrific. We are desperately sorry to learn that lives have been ruined by a man whose public face was so greatly at odds to his true character. It has clearly taken a lot of courage for these women to speak out, after a lifetime of having to hide it.

“This is the latest in a terrifying line of cases where high profile figures have systematically used their status, celebrity and power, to abuse and to rape.

“Clement Freud was a senior figure in the Liberals, our party’s predecessor, and we are deeply shocked and horrified by this news. Our party was never aware of what happened, and our hearts go out to the women who were affected.”  SOURCE dailymail
