Football sex abuse scandal: Top clubs ‘made secret payments to keep victims quiet’
Top football clubs made secret payments to buy the silence of young players sexually abused by coaches, The Telegraph can disclose, as the growing scandal threatened to engulf the sport.
A well-placed source said a number of clubs, including at least one Premier League team, had paid compensation to footballers but only after victims had signed confidentiality agreements so strict that along with their families and lawyers they are banned from saying publicly if the cases even existed.
The revelation will fuel concern that the national game has covered up historic sexual abuse for years.

NEW ABUSE SCANDAL ‘MAKES SAVILE LOOK LIKE A CHOIRBOY’
An ex-footballer has claimed former Crewe Alexandra coach Barry Bennell’s alleged abuse of young players make Jimmy Savile ‘look like a choirboy’.
Jason Dunford appeared on the BBC’s Victoria Derbyshire show this morning alongside Chris Unsworth – as they became the latest men to come forward with allegations they were sexually abused while playing in the Cheshire club’s youth system.
The pair sat alongside former professionals Andy Woodward and Steve Walters, who have gone public with details of their alleged abuse this week.
Mr Dunford said: “I think Savile looks like a choirboy compared to this fella, this is so big.”
Barry Bennell was jailed in 1998 after admitting 23 sex offences against young boys
‘I THOUGHT THIS IS WHAT I’VE GOT TO GO THROUGH’
Mr Dunford said he was sexually assaulted once by Bennell but was “frozen out” of the club after fighting him off and “telling him to f*** off.”
He said: “I told him where to go, I confronted him. I’ll never forget the deathly stare he gave me. After that, Bennell began to torment me – dropping me from the team, telling me I would play, but on the Sunday dropping me again.”
“There was a conspiracy, there was a paedophile ring.”
Mr Unsworth, 44, told the programme he was first raped as a nine-year-old boy but thought it was “what I had to do” to become a footballer.
He said: “He used to pick me up in his car and he used to touch me and play games on the way to training. It was hands everywhere and hands down the pants, then later it got more serious in the bedroom. I didn’t know what was going on. I knew where I wanted to get to and thought this is what I’ve got to go through.”

The pair – who didn’t go on to play professionally – revealed the alleged historic abuse after retired players Andy Woodward, Steve Walters, Paul Stewart and David White went public with their own claims this week.
Mr Woodward, Mr Walters and Mr White have all said they were victims of Bennell, now aged 62, while Mr Stewart said he was abused by another youth coach.
Mr Unsworth, who left football at 16, said: “We never spoke to each other about it.”

Mr Dunford and Mr Unsworth said they did not turn professional because, in part, of their experiences.
Bennell, who worked for Crewe Alexandra, Manchester City, Stoke and several junior teams in north-west England and the Midlands, has been at the centre of the unfolding scandal.
He is currently out of jail on licence and had been living under the name Richard Jones after he was released from prison.
Police searched his home in Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire, on Thursday evening, removing a golden retriever and several items from the bungalow, including cardboard boxes and packs of a nutritional drink.
A woman who lives opposite Bennell claims she has called the council in a bid to get him removed from the street where children live.
Bennell was given a four-year sentence for raping a British boy on a football tour of Florida in 1994 and then a nine-year sentence for 23 offences against six boys in England in 1998.
He was jailed for a third time in 2015 when he pleaded guilty to abusing a boy at a football camp in Macclesfield in 1980.
The predatory paedophile scouted a host of future football stars in the 1970s, ’80s and ’90s.
Both Mr Dunford and Mr Unsworth waived their right to anonymity in the interview with the BBC. Mr Unsworth said he chose to speak out after his girlfriend showed him an interview with Mr Woodward.
He added: “I had never, ever told anyone until that moment. I sat the rest of my family down yesterday and told them too. Speaking out is liberating.”
Paul Stewart says he was abused as a boy by a different unnamed coach
ENGLAND ACE REVEALS HE WAS SEXUALLY ABUSED BY HIS COACH
Mr Woodward, 43, is one of a number of former footballers, including ex-England and Manchester City players Mr White and Mr Stewart and former Crewe Alexandra player Mr Walters, who have spoken out about being sexually abused by football coaches as children.
Ex-Sheffield United player Mr Woodward said he was abused by Bennell at Crewe Alexandra.
Former England and Manchester City star Mr White, 49, told the BBC he was sexually abused by Bennell in the late 70s and early 80s while playing for Whitehill FC Junior team in Manchester.
Mr Walters, 44, said he had been abused by Bennell when he was 13 or 14 during a trip to Anglesey.
Former Liverpool and Tottenham player Mr Stewart, 52, waived his anonymity this week to exclusively tell the Daily Mirror he had been abused as a boy by a different unnamed coach.
Meanwhile police are investigating an allegation by a former Newcastle United player that he was abused in the club’s youth system, it has been reported.
It means that two police forces are now looking into the growing alleged sex abuse scandal which is threatening the national game as Cheshire Police said 11 people have come forward.
Steve Walters said he had been abused by Bennell when he was 13 or 14
A Northumbria Police spokesman told the Guardian: “We have received a report in relation to an allegation of historic sexual offences in Newcastle. We are working closely with, and supporting the victim and enquiries are ongoing.”
The Guardian said the former Newcastle player had contacted police to make allegations against George Ormond, a coach in the north east who was jailed for six years in 2002 for carrying out numerous assaults across a 24-year period.
Football Association chairman Greg Clarke was “appalled” after finding out the governing body failed to respond to Bennell’s conviction for sexual abuse.
Bennell was the subject of Channel 4 documentary called “Soccer’s Foul Play” in 1997 and the programme’s lead reporter, Deborah Davies, told PA that few in football wanted to talk about Bennell, that the FA refused all requests for interviews and said nothing after his conviction at Chester Crown Court.
“That is appalling,” said Clarke, who has been in charge since August, when that was put to him on Thursday.
After meeting with Mr Woodward, he said the FA is taking the scandal very seriously, adding: “We’ve got 8,500 safeguarding officers out there in the community and I wrote to 30,000 clubs today to raise their awareness.
“These are heinous crimes and they need to be investigated by the police and they will get our support.”
Gordon Taylor, chief executive of the Professional Footballers’ Association, told the BBC that the PFA and the FA had been aware of rumours of abuse, but no complaints were made and “there was no cover-up”.
Wayne Rooney has offered support for sex abuse victims
An NSPCC hotline – 2 – received 50 calls within its first two hours of being launched. It was set up after the ex-footballers spoke about abuse.
England and Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney has backed the NSPCC’s new football helpline amid the scandal.
The NSPCC ambassador said: “It’s awful that some of my colleagues have suffered this way whilst playing the sport that I and they love. Andy has been really brave to come forward and I would encourage anyone who has or is suffering from abuse to call the NSPCC’s new football helpline.”
In a statement Crewe’s director of football Dario Gradi expressed sympathy to the victims of Bennell and said he first knew of his crimes after his arrest in the US. The club is carrying out an internal investigation.
Manchester City told Press Association Sport: “The club is aware of allegations that Barry Bennell had an association with Manchester City in the 1980s. As a result the club is currently undertaking a thorough investigation of any past links he might have had with the organisation.”SOURCE
