Caroline Aherne: Ex reveals heartbreaking reason she never had children

Tragic actress Caroline Aherne allegedly decided not to have children because she was worried about passing on cancer to them. The Royle Family and Mrs Merton star died of cancer earlier this month, aged just 52.

Her ex-fiancé Brett Whitford has now claimed that she was worried about starting a family. He told The Sun on Sunday:

‘Caroline always felt that she didn’t have long to live and that the cancer she had would come back one day. It coloured the way she lived her life, because there were things she felt she couldn’t do. We talked about having kids, but she said she couldn’t because of the hereditary nature of the cancer and her other health problems.’

Caroline and Brett enjoyed a whirlwind 9-month romance after the comedian moved to Australia in 2001, and they were briefly engaged in 2002. Read in full HERE

Caroline became a national treasure in the 1990s when she played the mischievous, twinkly-eyed, blue-rinse chat show host Mrs Merton.

She also starred in The Fast Show – and more recently narrated Channel 4’s hit series Gogglebox.

Fiercely-private Caroline had to miss a number of episodes as she fought illness.

But Ricky, who is friends with Caroline’s older brother Patrick – who also fought cancer – believed her health had been improving.

He said: “Her death is the biggest shock in the world. It’s knocked me for six. Patrick said she was in good spirits last time we spoke. We were planning to meet in a pub in Manchester where I was doing a little talk two weeks ago, but he didn’t show up. Someone said: ‘Everything’s fine. He’s gone back to Spain.’ And I thought that’s good… she must be on the mend because he wouldn’t have gone away if she was ill.”
